How to set up your own domain for your Shopify store and how to set up email forwarding

"I want to get my own domain when I open a Shopify store."
"I want to open a Shopify store using my own domain that I already own."

When building or migrating your own e-commerce site to Shopify, one of the most common questions we get asked in the early stages is how to set up your own domain (custom domain).

In this article, we will explain how to set up your Shopify store in two ways: acquiring a new domain or using an existing domain, using the actual admin screen as an example.
In addition, when setting up your own domain with Shopify, you should be aware of the following points: SSL and email forwarding settings. We will also explain these two points while pointing out some points to note.

[For those who want to acquire a new domain] How to purchase and set up your own domain with Shopify

It's easy to purchase and set up a new domain with Shopify. The steps are roughly as follows:

  1. Access the admin page and click "Domains" under "Online Store".
  2. Click on "Buy a new domain"
  3. Enter the domain you want to purchase
  4. Select a domain that can be used in your store and make payment by clicking "Purchase"
  5. Enter credit card information and make payment

We will explain each step with actual screen shots.

1. Access the admin screen and click on your online store domain

1. Access the admin screen and click on your online store domain

Log in to your Shopify admin with your store owner account.
Then, from the menu on the left side, click on “Online Store > Domains” (the area surrounded by the red frame in the image above).
In the image above, a domain has already been purchased and set up on Shopify, and it is displayed.
If you don't have a domain purchased and set up, you'll only see the "Buy a new domain" button and the "Connect an existing domain" text link.

2. Click "Buy a new domain"

2. Click "Buy a new domain"

On the "Online Store > Domains" page of your admin panel, click the "Buy New Domain" button (shown in the red frame in the image above).
You will then see the screen shown above.

3. Enter the domain you want to purchase

3. Enter the domain you want to purchase

4. Select a domain that can be used in your store and make payment by clicking "Purchase"

When you enter the domain you want to purchase, candidate domains will be displayed below (the area surrounded by the red frame in the image above).
Next to each available domain will be the cost and a "Buy" button, so click the "Buy" button for the domain you want.
Furthermore, the word "Unavailable" will be displayed next to any domain that is already in use and therefore cannot be used.

5. Enter credit card information and make payment

When you click the "Buy" button for the domain you want to purchase, you will be taken to a screen where you can enter your credit card details. Enter the required information and check the terms and conditions.
If you check "Auto-renew this domain every year," your domain will be automatically renewed every year.
Finally, click "Buy domain" to complete the domain purchase and setup.

After purchase, it takes time for the domain to be reflected.

Once your domain purchase is complete, you will receive a confirmation email from Shopify.
Your purchased domain will be credited within 48 hours.

[For those who already have a domain] How to add and set up your own domain on Shopify

You can also use a domain acquired through a third-party service for your Shopify store.
In this case, you will need to follow the steps below to complete the procedure on both the admin screen of the relevant service and on the Shopify admin screen.

Change the DNS record of the domain management service you are using

First, go to the management screen of the service that subscribes to the domain you want to add/set up, and complete the following two settings for the DNS code.

1. Change the A record in the DNS code

In your DNS record settings, change all A records to Shopify's IP address, "23.227.38.65."

2. Setting the www CNAME record

In your DNS record settings, set "shops.myshopify.com" as the CNAME record for "www".
