This article is for you. With Shopify, you can easily set up redirects from the admin panel.
In this article, we, certified Shopify Experts, will explain in detail how to set up redirects on Shopify.
Key points of this article
- Specific steps for setting up redirects on the Shopify admin screen with images
- Also includes information on the difference between 301 and 302 redirects
- You can also learn points to note when setting up redirects.
Example of using redirects in Shopify
There are two main cases when redirection is necessary: when the domain has changed and when the URL of the product page has changed.
If you change the domain
When renewing the design or concept of an EC site, you may also want to change the system domain. In such cases, it is very important to set up the redirect correctly.
By setting up a redirect, you can connect users who visited your old site to your new site and also retain your SEO rankings.
We will go into detailed instructions on how to set up Shopify later, but this will be a major undertaking as it will require setting up the server and responding to and checking every page on your e-commerce site.
If the URL of the product page has changed
Redirect settings are also required if the URL of the product page changes.
For example, consider the following case.
"After reviewing our product categories, we found it necessary to change the URL."
In cases like this, you need to connect the "source" page and the "destination" page.
This setting only requires connecting each page on the Shopify admin screen, so it is a minor change compared to the "changing domain" mentioned above.
Redirecting when changing domain
In this section, we will explain about "redirecting when changing domains."
Connect and set up both your old and new domains to Shopify
Now, let's take a look at how to set up a redirect when the domain changes, with some screenshots from the Shopify admin screen.
It's simple: just connect both your old and new domains to Shopify and point them to the new domain for redirection.
To connect and set up your domain, click "Online Store" > "Domains" on the sidebar of your Shopify admin screen.
On the Domains screen, click Connect an existing domain.
Enter the domain in the "Domain input field" shown above and click "Next".
In the above screen, confirm the domain connection.
If you did not purchase the new domain through Shopify but instead obtained it through another site, you will need to set the "A record" and "CNAME" in your DNS settings as follows:
A Record: "23.227.38.65" (Shopify's IP address)
CNAME: "shops.myshopify.com"
